Awards Banquet will be held Thursday, November 12 at The Castaway in Burbank starting at 6 p.m..
     Ann Ransford will receive the J. Walter Smith Award for Distinguished Service to GCC.  Pat Crouch will be given the Raymond D. Edwards Award of Merit for Career Achievement and Community Service.  Judy Gorham will be honored with the Patrons Club Presidential Award. Six scholarships will also be awarded during the program.  Call 818-551-5199 for information.

            The Glendale Community College Transfer Center will host a Transfer Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Plaza Vaquero. Representatives from several four-year colleges and universities, both public and private, will have information for students about their schools as well as admission requirements.  The application deadline for the UC and CSU campuses is Nov. 30.

BECOMING AMERICAN TOPIC OF TALK

     As part of the Glendale Public Library citywide reading program One Book/One Glendale, a series of events sponsored by Glendale Community College are being held on campus in October. The next event is “Becoming American: A Psychological Analysis” presented by psychology professor Mike Dulay on Thursday Oct 22 at noon in Kreider Hall. The book selected for One Book/One Glendale is author Lisa See’s latest, “Shanghai Girls,” about two sisters in 1937 that leave Shanghai for Los Angeles. GCC will host a talk by See on Oct. 29.

ENCORE HOLDS 10th ANNIVERSARY PARTY

     For its 10th anniversary at Glendale Community College the ENCORE program is hosting a celebration on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the college’s Life Skills Building beginning at 10 a.m. ENCORE is a program run by and for seniors and is associated with the Elderhostel Institute Network. LECTURE FOCUS IS IMPACT OF STAR TREK & STAR WARS
     “The Anthropology of Star Trek and Star Wars” will be presented at GCC Thursday, Oct. 8 at noon in Kreider Hall, sponsored by the Cosmology and Astrophysics Club. The speaker is anthropologist and biologist Daryl Frazetti of Western Nevada College. The talk will examine themes in Star Trek and Star Wars including politics, religion, identity, technology and the anthropological concept of race. Frazetti will also
touch on the subculture of fandom and the cultural impact of both franchises.  Admission is free. For more information call 818-240-1000.

CAMPUS HOLD BEAUTIFICATION FAIR

     “This is Your GCC” is the theme of a campus beautification effort at
Glendale Community College that will kick off with a fair on Tuesday, Sept. 29
from noon to 1 p.m. on Plaza Vaquero that will emphasize keeping the campus
clean and free of vandalism. The fair will feature speakers, sign ups for clean-up
projects, food, contests and information booths. New banners are being placed
around campus with information on the cost of fixing vandalized property and
other messages in an effort to encourage faculty, student and staff
responsibility for the campus.

ALCOHOL AND DRUG STUDIES SUMMIT HELD

     The first annual Alcohol and Drug Studies Informational Summit will be
held Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Center. The free
event will feature guest speakers to promote awareness of alcohol and drug
addiction, recovery options and employment trends in the profession of alcohol
and drug dependency treatment. The speakers include Father Jack Kearney,
President, California Association of Alcohol/Drug Educators, an organization that
certifies alcohol/drug studies programs like GCC’s and accredits addiction
counselors in the state of California. The event is sponsored by the Alcohol and
Drug Studies Club.

CALTECH SPEAKER DISCUSSES EVOLUTION EXPLORER 
 
     "Adventures in Ultraviolet Astronomy with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer" Is a free lecture at Glendale Community College on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at noon in Santa Barbara Building room 243 as part of the Science Lecture Series.
     The speaker is Dr. James D. ?Don? Neill, Senior Postdoctoral Scholar at California Institute of Technology
     The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) is a NASA Small Explorer class satellite that was designed to study the evolution of galaxies.  To facilitate this exploration, it employs the ability to take wide-field images in the ultraviolet (UV) part of the spectrum.  These UV images have revealed aspects of galaxy evolution that were previously unknown.  The wide field of GALEX has also afforded many other serendipitous discoveries when interesting things happen to fall in the image.  Neill will introduce the GALEX satellite and describe its design and primary mission and results as well as the fortuitous discoveries that GALEX has made in galaxy evolution and in the evolution of stars in the Milky Way galaxy.

GCC CENTER DONATES
TO SCHOOL ON WHEELS

     The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) at GCC has been collecting backpacks, school supplies and backpacks full of school supplies for the Pack-A-Backpack drive to benefit homeless children in Glendale through the non-profit organization School on Wheels.
      The collected items will be given to School on Wheels on Friday, Sept. 11, the federally recognized 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. School on Wheels will have a representative at the Center for Student Involvement, located in room 267 of the Sierra Madre Building, at 11 a.m. to accept the donations.
      CSI helps students become active citizens in the community through a variety of projects, programs, and activities. The center provides resources and opportunities to faculty and students who would like to give back to the community through community service, service-learning, and volunteerism. The program has been serving the GCC community since 1994. More than 20,000 students have volunteered over 200,000 hours of service to the community in that time.

FILM CO-WRITTEN BY GCC INSTRUCTOR SCREENED AT LAEMMLES 

     Dheevari Fishermans Daughter, a Sri Lankan film co-written by Salinda Perera and Glendale Community College English instructor Darrell Costa, will be showing at the Laemmles Monica 4-Plex on July 11 and 12 at 11 a.m.
     The film won the Peoples Choice Award at the Dubai International Film Festival and was entered in several other film festivals in Montreal, France, India, Italy and New York. It is set in a 1970s Sri Lankan fishing village where a determined young woman tries to overcome superstition, the iniquities of a traditional feudal system and the constant cycle of poverty.
     Costa, a resident of Silverlake, has been teaching English courses at GCC since 2007. He holds a B.A. in English/creative writing from UC Berkeley and a MFA in screenwriting from UCLA. He has written more than 15 feature films including the 2006 Strike/Universal film Fuel based on a true story of a convoy massacre in 2004 Iraq. He is currently developing a TV comedy pilot, Lets Be Frank, about a commitment-phobic man.
     The Santa Monica screenings are fundraisers for internally displaced persons in Sri Lanka. The theater is located at 1332 2nd St., Santa Monica.
