The softball program at Glendale Community College begins a new era as preparation for the 2014 season begins. New Head Coach Sal Pizzo, who has been an assistant at GCC for the past six seasons, takes over for Coach Dave "Hawk" Wilder who passed away in June and led the program for the past 14 seasons.

Coach Pizzo says of his predecessor: "Coach Wilder leaves some big shoes to fill. He has been the face of the program for so many years. It has been an honor to work along side "Hawk" for the past six years. The best thing we can do to honor his memory, is to move forward in a positive way and commit this season to him and ultimately "win" as he would want. We will continue to recruit and develop student-athletes with high character and great attitudes and make it our priority to have them move on to a four-year school both academically and athletically.

Prior to his experience at Glendale College, Pizzo coached at Cleveland High in Reseda, California and continues to be involved in travel ball, working college showcases and camps around the country.

The GCC softball program is also fortunate to have assistant coaches with over 25 years of combined experience. Coach George "Gunner" Dumais begins his fourth year on the staff. He has coached for several years at the high school level and led the elite Marine Corps team where he earned his "Gunner" moniker.

Coach Steve Demchak returns after a one-year coaching hiatus. Demchak concentrated solely on recruituing this past year and is responsible for several of the incoming freshman entering the program. He has over 10 years of high school and travel ball coaching experience, as well as two previous seasons on the GCC staff.

Angela Pizzo (Outfield/Base Running) and Christianne Saiz (Pitching) will be the two new additions to the coaching staff this season.

Angela is a GCC alum who played for the Vaqueros for two years and then transferred to William Penn University in Iowa. Christianne played her college ball at Iowa Lakes JC followed by two years at St. Cloud University in Minnesota.

Both of these young ladies college playing experience should bring an added demension to the coaching staff.

The 2014 team will be comprised of several returning sophomores as well as a group of  talented freshmen. "Our freshmen recruiting class is as talented and deep as any we have had since I have coached at GCC'' says Pizzo. "The players who work the hardest and play the smartest and prepare the way we expect them to, will ultimately be the players who make the team.''
