| "2 + 2" = 4-year degree! Spend two years at
Glendale College plus two years at a university and you can have a Bachelors degree
in four years. You can also save money on tuition by attending a community college instead
of enrolling all four years at a university. What Classes/Majors are
available? Glendale offers the same general education courses you would take
during the first two years at a university, plus 75 academic majors in such areas as
Accounting, Art/Fine Arts, Aviation, Biology, Business Administration, Computer Science
and Information Systems, Culinary Arts, Hotel & Restaurant Management, Marketing, Mass
Communication, Music, Nursing, Theatre, and Visual Arts. The College offers the Associate
in Arts degrees and Associate in Science degrees. Refer to the Glendale catalog for more
detailed information on majors, courses and course descriptions.
Does Glendale C.C. offer an Intensive English/ESL Program for
TOEFL preparation? No. Glendale College does not issue
the immigration Form I-20 for “Language Training” only. Instead,
Glendale College has a very strong “College Credit” English as a
Second Language Division. This
program is designed for regular admitted students who have the minimum
TOEFL score of 45(iBT)
450 or 133.
The program offers five levels of ESL courses based on a
student’s ESL Placement Test before registering for classes.
International students looking to complete a short-term
Intensive English program before entering G.C.C. should contact
the International Office for information on language companies.
Hows the Faculty? GCCs professors focus on
teaching and instruction rather than research. They are accessible, dedicated and able to
provide personalized attention. All Glendale full time faculty hold either masters
or doctoral degrees in their chosen fields and disciplines.
How do I Apply for Admission? Print out the
"International Application for Admission" Students
Application Form (requires Adobe) and
mail the form with your supporting documents to the International Student Office, Glendale
Community College, 1500 North Verdugo Road, Glendale, CA 91208-2894 USA. You may also
contact the International Student Office by E-mail:gcciso@glendale.edu
How do I Register for Classes? As an international visa
student you first need to be formally accepted and qualify for the immigration
/SEVIS Form
I-20. Upon arrival to Glendale, you should report to the International Student Office for
orientation and advising with one of the staff counselors. Placement tests in English/ESL
and Math are provided to new students during orientation. Following orientation and
clearance from the International counselor, students are permitted to register. As an
international student on the F-1 visa category, you will want to maintain full time status
(12 units of credit) each semester at Glendale.
How large are classes? The average class size is 25 students.
ESL classes are usually smaller.
How about Extracurricular Activities and Student Life? Nearly
50 social, academic, athletic and career clubs and organizations are available to students
to join, in addition to the Student Government Association. There are also many
international student groups such as the International Students Association, Vietnamese
Club and Korean Christian Club, to name a few. The College is proud to host each spring
"World Culture Week" which includes an International Fashion Show, Food Fair and
Dinner Dance for the entire community.
What is the Transfer Rate? Among Californias 108
community colleges, Glendale College has one of the highest "transfer
rates" to the University
of California and California State University campuses. Many students who attend G.C.C.
their first two years do as well as, or better than, students who began as freshmen at a
four-year college or university. International students are also able to choose from a
variety of private universities and colleges within California or other parts of the
country.
Any special programs for the "superior" student?
Yes! If you qualify for the Scholars Program, you will experience priority registration at
GCC, along with small classes and seminar-style study groups. Other benefits include use
of the UCLA library and priority consideration for admission with junior standing (third
year) at top public and private universities in California.
Any More Advantages? GCC offers great opportunities to excel
in leadership positions during the first two years of college. At most four-year
institutions, students must wait until their junior or senior year to become a school
newspaper editor, star in a stage/theatre production, or on the athletic field. Glendale
students can even serve as a student legislator with the student government association.
What are the tuition and fees for International students? The
International Application Form processing fee is $50. To register for classes,
international students pay the non-resident tuition rate of $181 per unit. Most classes
are three units of credit. Full time international students can expect to pay
approximately $2,500 per semester for tuition, fees, books and supplies; or $5,000 for the
academic year of two semesters.
How about living expenses and housing options? As with most
California community colleges, Glendale does not offer on-campus housing or dormitories.
Students may find a variety of off-campus apartments and housing for rent in the local
area. They may also choose to live with an American family as part of a
"homestay" option. It is advisable to make reservations at a local hotel/motel
before arrival. Total living expenses for one academic year (10 months) are estimated at
$11,000 to include rent, meals, transportation, personal expenses.
Can International students qualify for scholarships or employment?
Students on any visa category are not eligible for U.S. federal or California State
financial aid programs. Glendale does offer a limited number of scholarship programs based
on need, merit, and special categories to continuing students after their first semester.
International students are permitted to work on-campus up to a maximum of 20 hours per
week. Off-campus employment is not permitted during the first academic year and may only
be granted with special work authorization by the Immigration service. |
