What is Infusion?
Infusing information competency into a course or discipline means that the ability of students to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate, and use effectively that information is an integral part of any research assignment in that course or discipline.
Courses and disciplines that have information competency infused into their curricula have made information competency (the ability of students to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate, and use effectively that information) an integral part of that course or discipline.
Disciplines/Courses with Infused Information Competency
Cultural Anthropology - Students complete a research assignment on an assigned culture. In the past, the students came to the library for an instruction session tailored to their research assignment. Currently, the Cultural Anthropology instructor directs the students to an online Cultural Anthropology Resources research guide designed for this assignment and discusses the required library research with them. While completing the research assignment, students fill out a
Web Page Evaluation Worksheet for one of the web sites they consult when doing research. Once the research assignment is complete, students complete a survey (pdf) about their use of the library and its resources.
Nursing - Information competency instruction is infused into two courses: NS200: Nursing Perspectives and NS211: Medical-Surgical Nursing 1. In NS200, students are introduced to information competency for the nursing profession through a one-hour instruction session in the library's instruction room. They complete exercises related to course content or research topics. In NS211, students research a topic related to their course using the EBSCO and ProQuest databases available through the GCC library as well as the web. Students compare the results of their search and write a paper using APA style. The library and the nursing department hope to more fully infuse information competency into more courses within the nursing curriculum in the future.
