Course Descriptions

Library 191: Introduction to Information Competency (2 units) Transfer Credit: CSU, UC

Library 191 is designed to teach and strengthen lifelong research and information literacy skills by introducing students to the nature of research and the role of the library in the research process. Students learn the core concepts of information retrieval and essential techniques for finding, analyzing, organizing, and presenting information. The topics to be covered include: understanding call numbers; utilizing online catalogs to locate books and other library resources; expanding knowledge of reference materials; developing research strategies; exercising critical thinking to evaluate information; applying critical and technical skills to periodical and online databases; understanding bibliographic citation formats and the role annotations play in the evaluation and research process; and using the Internet as a research tool.


Recommended Preparation: Eligibility for ENGL 101

Note: No credit will be given to students who have completed Library 101 prior to Library 191. Students completing both Library 191 and Library 101 will receive a maximum of two units for both classes.

*Section #3420 meets on campus, face-to-face on Tuesdays from 10:45 am-11:50 am and also 50 minutes online each week. HOWEVER, the first 3 Thursday sessions (9/2, 9/9, 9/16) will also be held on campus and face-to-face from 10:45 am-11:35 am in LB313.
