Dr. Edit Khachatryan
As a Trustee representing Area 2, Dr. Edit Khachatryan is committed to ensuring that
GCC continues to serve as an engine of opportunity by helping students build career
pathways, transfer to four-year universities, and achieve economic mobility. She brings
a collaborative, data-informed approach grounded in listening to students, educators,
and the community, with a particular focus on expanding opportunity for first-generation
and immigrant students like herself.
Born in Armenia, Dr. Khachatryan came to Glendale with her family at age nine and
attended Columbus Elementary, Toll Middle School, and Hoover High School in the Glendale
Unified School District. She began her career as a high school teacher in Los Angeles
and Glendale, teaching history, government, and economics, where she saw firsthand
both the power of strong teaching and the challenges students face when systems fall
short. This experience shaped her lifelong commitment to improving public education
for historically underserved students.
Dr. Khachatryan went on to serve as a Teaching Ambassador Fellow at the U.S. Department
of Education under Secretary Arne Duncan, bringing educator perspective into federal
policy discussions. That experience led her to pursue a Ph.D. in Education from Stanford
University, where she studied teaching quality, professional learning, and leadership
development.
She has since worked nationally with schools, districts, and colleges through the
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, contributing to initiatives such
as Carnegie Math Pathways, now housed at WestEd, which used improvement science to
significantly increase success rates for community college students in remedial math.
More recently, Dr. Khachatryan founded Sovoroom, where she partners with nonprofits,
universities, and school systems to build capacity for continuous improvement, helping
leaders translate ideas into measurable results for students.
Dr. Khachatryan resides in Glendale with her husband and two young children. Both
of her children are enrolled at the GCC Child Development Center lab school, giving
her a firsthand understanding of the importance of strong, transparent, and accountable
public institutions for families in the community.
Dr. Khachatryan's present term is June 2026 – June 2030.
