DEI Awareness Month

DEI Awareness Month

The Chancellor’s Office has designated April 2021, as the inaugural Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Awareness month. Colleges throughout the California Community College system are encouraged to share their commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable culture and learning environment. In late February GCC unveiled a new webpage dedicated to the college’s DEI efforts. You can find three links on the glendale.edu homepage or simply type glendale.edu/DEI in your web browser. Topics include, Calls to Action, DEI Initiatives, Resources for Students, Resources for College Employees, Reading Lists and Additional References, and Reporting Discrimination. The DEI website is a work in progress. If you have any questions or ideas, please contact Academic Senate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee Chair, April Bey.

GCC Launches Preparations for Accreditation Evaluation

Every seven years, GCC undergoes a comprehensive self-evaluation to retain its accreditation. The self-evaluation process provides the college an opportunity to analyze its policies and practices. It culminates in the creation of a document named the Institutional Self-Evaluation Report (ISER) that substantiates with evidence the college’s meeting of the standards of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). On March 19, the college held a kick-off event by Zoom, to launch preparations of its ISER and share what to expect during the next two years.

  • Spring 2023: an external team composed of reviewers from peer colleges will use the report to verify GCC’s compliance with standards and will also identify any areas that may require further scrutiny and evidence gathering.

  • Fall 2023: the team will visit GCC in person to conduct interviews and explore operational areas that may need improvement. The team will send a report of their findings to the ACCJC.

  • January 2024: GCC will receive notice from the ACCJC of its conclusions.

Fighting the Virus

In early March, the City of Glendale blocked an entire day for GCC faculty and staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Nearly 25% of the more than 1,100 people contacted took advantage of the opportunity and have now received two doses. If you want to get vaccinated but missed out, a mass vaccination site is opening on the GCC campus Saturday, April 10 (see next story.)

Mass Vaccination Site Comes to Verdugo Campus

GCC has agreed to allow the City of Glendale and Adventist Healthcare to host a mass vaccination clinic on the Verdugo Campus beginning Saturday, April 10. The three-month operation will run Thursday-Sunday through mid-July and is expected to vaccinate up to 2,500 people each day. Marketing will target Glendale, but the clinic will be open to Los Angeles County residents. To make a reservation to be vaccinated at the Jewel City Vax Clinic go to myturn.ca.gov.

Vaqueros women’s basketball player Tess Oakley-Stilson on being named 2020 CCCAA Female Scholar Athlete of the Year:

Congratulations to GCC's Scholar-Athletes!

"While this award has my name on it, what it really means to me is that Glendale College played such a big role in shaping me during my two years as a student-athlete and that I could not be more appreciative for the experiences I have had on and off the basketball court,'' she said.

"Coach Weiss and my teammates over the past two years mean everything to me. My teachers challenged and motivated me, especially my English teacher Dr. Groper, and there was always the opportunity to reach out to them for help and support and I will never forget them for that. Lastly it was my friends and family who helped me stay balanced and on track, especially over the past year.''
