Vax Mandate Update
The vaccination check-in policy remains in effect on both the Verdugo and Garfield Campuses. In addition, GCC continues to require that masks be worn indoors despite the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health lifting its indoor mask requirement in March. Los Angeles County Public Health still strongly recommends that people continue to wear masks in indoor public places and defers to each institution and business to decide its own rules. At GCC, that means if you’re indoors, mask up.

Architecture
Architecture student Mania Minasvand was a finalist in the Bee Breeders Home for the Blind Competition, the world's leading architecture competition featuring students from international colleges and universities. Mania’s submission was selected for the shorted projects list. The Home for the Blind competition is part of a Bee Breeders Competition series focused on accessible architecture, specifically designs for a semi-detached house for a single blind occupant. Awards were decided by an international jury panel. Mania credits her instructor, Paul Chiu, with advising her through the competition. “My design concept for the home of the blind, The Paper Clip House, was inspired by the idea of a walking trail that forms a continuous two-dimension path on the ground to mark the shape of its pattern, and then we pull the pattern upwards to form a three-dimensional shape. Just like a shape of a paper clip resting on the ground and pulling it upwards to form a three-dimension path to imply a hidden space,” Mania said.
While You Are Away
The area now known as the Kinesiology and Vaquero Athletic Complex (VQ) is nearing completion after extensive remodeling and construction. Some areas are now open and repopulated with staff and students. Here is a look at some of the artwork now in place in the gym, locker room, and weight room. Go Vaqs!

In the News: CalWORKs
A recent article and subsequent column in the LA Times examined California’s practice of taking child support payments meant for low-income families enrolled in the CalWORKs program. Although GCC was not specifically part of either piece, our well-known and successful CalWORKs program prompted the newspaper to photograph our CalWORKs office for visual support. The photo was featured both times. Big thanks to Aarin Edwards for making sure the photo shoot went well.
