Biology Research Students Get Published

Biology Research Students Get Published

Students of Biology Professor Shelley Thai in collaboration with students of Dr. Michelle Lum, an associate professor at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), will have their collective research project results published in the Journal of Bacteriology, a well-known journal that publishes primary, peer-reviewed research articles.

Thai’s students were enrolled in Biology 298 - Undergraduate Research in Microbiology and Molecular Biology. Several of the students enjoyed the experience so much that they returned to continue their research by taking BIO 049 as independent student researchers along with the LMU students. The resulting work was submitted by the two professors and accepted for publication. In addition, the article was selected for the Spotlight and for the cover of the journal’s December issue. The title of the article is "Multiple Copies of flhDC in Paraburkholderia unamae Regulate Flagellar Gene Expression, Motility, and Biofilm Formation."

New Science Building Crane Arrives

Crane
Crane

Visitors to the Verdugo Campus will likely notice a 16-story crane towering over the New Science Building (NSB) construction site.  The crane arrived in November and  required a 550-ton hydraulic assist crane and the temporary closure of multiple traffic lanes on N. Verdugo Road during its installation. The crane will be used during the construction of the five story, 116,000-square foot building which is targeted for opening in 2023.

Tower crane facts:

  • 174 feet 7 inches at highest point of tower
  • Lifting boom is 268 feet 10 inches from tower at farthest point
  • Lifting hook is 128 feet 6 inches above ground
  • No load is ever hoisted over people or occupied buildings

Latest Mural Debuts on Administration Building

Mural

Los Angeles-based artist Kim Schoenstadt’s “California Respite” is now on display on the elevator tower on the north side of the Verdugo Campus. The mural, which features an imaginary architectural structure perched atop a dreamy landscape, was selected for the 2021 Glendale Community College Public Art Invitational sponsored by The Art Gallery at GCC with director David John Attyah, the Glendale College Foundation, and the GCC President's Office.

“California Respite” is the third in a series of public art installations at GCC. Painter and public artist Jose Ramirez produced A Short History of Los Angeles in 2019, which appears on the south wall of the Administration Building facing the Auditorium. For the 2017 GCC Public Art Competition, photographer Pasclaine Doucin-Dahlke produced Red Mountain, which appears at the entrance of the Library building.

Search Begins for Next Superintendent/President

The application process is now open in the search for the college’s next Superintendent/President to replace Dr. David Viar who announced in October that he will be retiring at the end of the current academic year in June 2022.

The GCC Board of Trustees has hired an executive search firm to help identify the top candidates who will also be vetted by an eleven-person screening committee made up of faculty, classified staff, administrators, a student, and a college foundation board member.

In late March, finalists will be invited to the college to meet with constituent groups, participate in a public forum and interview with the Board of Trustees which will make a final decision in April. The new Superintendent/President will begin their duties in July 2022.

The college has created a comprehensive webpage and booklet that describe the position, the college’s priority issues of importance, leadership qualities expected of the candidate, minimum and desirable qualifications, in addition to other information.

Interested candidates have until January 31, 2022 to apply. Application materials are to be submitted through the GCC online application process at: GCC Superintendent/PresidentSearch.

GCC: The Bridge to Your Future

bridge

Local Spectrum Cable viewers may notice some new ads promoting GCC from now until the start of the spring semester.

GCC’s ad buys usually focus exclusively on digital platforms that target people who are most likely to attend college. However, with the unveiling of GCC’s new bridge logo, the latest campaign is delivered to a general audience to build awareness of the bridge as metaphor theme.

The campaign also markets the Career Education program offered at GCC. At 15 seconds, the shorter ads (click to see) allow us to buy more air time to promote the message that GCC is the bridge to your future.
