Vaccination Check-In Stations

Students and visitors to the Verdugo and Garfield Campuses are now required to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a GCC approved medical or religious exemption to enter college facilities. Check-in stations are situated on both campuses Monday through Friday where approved students and visitors are issued a color-coded wristband each day.

Although GCC faculty and staff are not required to wear a wristband, the college is providing a yellow rubber wristband that can be worn voluntarily to show support for the students and amplify the message “Keep GCC Safe.”

The Office of Communications and Community Relations will share instructions on how to acquire an employee wristband once the manufacturer delivers them to campus.

GCC Selected for College Corps

GCC Selected for College Corps
GCC Selected for College Corps

GCC is one of only eighteen community colleges statewide selected for a government grant that will offer students the opportunity to earn up to $10K while attending college. There are 45 community colleges and universities that have been selected to participate in the College Corps program. The two-year, service-based program has three key goals:

  • Engage college students in meaningful opportunities that build leaderships skills and civic responsibility.
  • Help students from diverse backgrounds graduate college on time and with less debt.
  • Support the work of community-based organizations focused on key priorities.

The GCC program will receive more than $7.5 million over two years which will be used to select 200 students each year who will complete up to 450 hours of service in one of two focus areas: K-12 (mentorship program for GCC/GUSD early college academies) or basic needs support organizations. Because it’s a state funded program, Dreamer students will be able to participate. The first cohort of students will start their service work in August 2022.

PDC Earns $1.5 Million Grant

PDC

The Professional Development Center (PDC) has earned a $1.5 million statewide grant for communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. The highly competitive one-time grant through California’s Employment Training Panel will allow the PDC to shift resources and train more individuals due to a less restrictive contract.

In addition to businesses, the funding allows training for non-profit organizations such as the City of Glendale, Glendale Fire, Glendale Police, GUSD, Chamber of Commerce, local hospital staff, and other organizations. The funding also will help attract and retain business and provide secure good paying jobs with opportunities for advancement for employees.

GCC is the only community college that will be implementing the contract independently. Other colleges are teaming up in groups in order to prove they can handle such a large contract.
