Graduation
In this most unusual of years, our 2020 commencement ceremony was not held at Sartoris Field. The sight of graduates walking between the standing rows of faculty members in front of stands full of proud family and friends is always a moving scene. However, we celebrate the accomplishments of the 2020 graduating class the best way possible under the circumstances. A record number of students applied for graduation for spring 2020. The youngest grad is 17 years old and the oldest is 82. The 129 Associate in Arts degrees, 164 Associate in Science degrees, 240 Associate in Arts for Transfer and 262 Associate in Science for Transfer candidates, plus 230 certificates of completion earned by the class of 2020 shows their dedication to success and reflects on the dedication of the entire GCC community in helping them reach their goals. Read a collection of success stories, view the flipbook graduation program and video messages at www.glendale.edu/graduation.
Fall Semester
Open registration for fall 2020 is underway and it is important to remind students and prospective students that it is not too late to apply and/or register for classes. With the campus closed and all in-person outreach cancelled, there was no printing of the fall class schedule. There is an online pdf and flipbook version at https://www.glendale.edu/class-schedule/printed-class-schedule. As always, the most up-to-date credit and noncredit class listings can be found at www.glendale.edu/schedules.
Anti-Racism Dialogue and Resources
The Social Sciences Division, ASGCC and Student Equity virtual lecture series "Deconstructing Racism: A Persistent American Challenge" concluded Friday, June 19. The seven-part series featured faculty presentations and on June 18, “The Push for Progress at GCC - A Discussion of the Ways our College Community Has Worked to Respond to the Challenges of Discrimination” was presented by members of ASGCC and the Black Student Union, along with Hoover Zariani, Multicultural & Community Engagement Center director. As an institution of higher learning, it is the responsibility of all of us to work towards change and prepare our students for a better world, an antiracist world. If you missed any of the presentations from this important series, you can watch videos of each presentation and access links to resources by visiting www.glendale.edu/antiracism.
Learning and Professional Pathways: A GP Update
Pillar One: Clarify the Path
The newly unveiled Learning and Professional Pathways (LPPs) - yes! We have a new name for ‘meta-majors’ - group majors by common subjects, careers, and course work. GCC’s eight LPPs will encourage students to select a pathway towards a degree or certificate and provide counselors and faculty tools to help students stay on and complete their path. The LPP descriptions are being finalized and a workgroup will create generalized program maps for each degree and certificate this summer. Check the GP website for updates and remember all workgroups have open meetings. Join the mailing list to get involved!
Helping Our Students in Need
Many GCC students were already facing housing and food insecurity challenges prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the unprecedented health and economic crisis, hundreds of GCC students are now facing an urgent basic needs emergency. You can help them by contributing to the Student Emergency Fund which is providing grocery store gift cards, and emergency grants to help pay for rent, utilities, internet, health insurance and other basic needs.
