BOG Appoints First Female Chancellor
The California Community Colleges Board of Governors has named Dr. Sonya Christian as the new permanent Chancellor of the 116-college system. Dr. Christian most recently served as the Chancellor of the Kern Community College District where Governor Gavin Newsom says, “she built a reputation for collaboration and results in the Central Valley.” You can read the news release here. Dr. Christian will begin her duties on June 1, 2023, and replaces Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley, who stepped down in August after leading the community college system for nearly six years.Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo Visits Garfield Campus
The 2020 census prompted the State Legislature to redraw legislative district lines which now places the Garfield Campus into the redrawn 52nd District represented by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (photo: fifth from left). The third term assemblymember visited the Garfield campus on February 27 where she took a tour and met with representatives of GCC, GUSD and the City of Glendale. GCC now has two assemblymembers who represent portions of the GCCD. Assemblymember Laura Friedman’s 44th District includes the Verdugo Campus.

Organic Chemistry Presentations Return
As more students take advantage of an in-person learning environment, more GCC traditions are getting back on track. Connecting with...Natalie Landivar
You may know her voice, but this may be the first time you’ve seen Natalie Landivar, GCC’s College Information Officer. Natalie Landivar has worked in the Operator’s Office for the past 15 years. Natalie grew up on the Verdugo Campus frequently joining her mom, Nellie Lopez, who worked in EOPS for 28 years. Natalie remembers as a child walking around and playing on the tennis and volleyball courts before they were replaced by the San Fernando complex. She recalls being here when former President Bill Clinton visited the campus. GCC has always been a part of her life.
Why did you choose to work at GCC?
I started as a GCC student worker. A couple of years after leaving GCC, I got a call from my previous supervisor, that they needed an hourly and asked if I was interested. I was currently in the middle of deciding to look for another job. There was no question about working at GCC. I loved the campus and the people that I had gotten to know. I went to apply the very next day and started working the following week. I started as an hourly and after a few short months, I got the full-time position.
What about your job makes you proud?
Being able to help the person that is calling. Sometimes I get callers that are lost or confused on what to do or who to talk to. I am able to provide them with information on what they need or who they need to contact. I love that I can guide them with that. When I have someone end a call with “you have been helpful, thank you,” it always makes me feel good and puts a smile on my face.
Do you have a favorite memory working at GCC?
My favorite memory is a funny one. It is when I received a call from a former student that needed to speak with the Job Placement Center. They explained to me that they needed proof they had worked in various places on campus. I connected them to the office. They called back later that they were here and couldn’t find the office. I was trying to direct them on how to get to the office. They continued to call many times that they just could not find the building. The student mentioned that they were on a particular street and I told them that is not the street where we are located. I even gave them directions exiting the 2 freeway. Turns out that they were in Arizona. They had been looking for Glendale Community College in Arizona, which we have no affiliation with. And that’s how I found out that there was another Glendale Community College.
Other interests, hobbies, career achievements? One of my hobbies is crafting. I love watching a video and then trying to do it myself. I have a Cricut machine that cuts vinyl. I love making prints for shirts to picture frames or my own Christmas ornaments.
Favorite movies/TV Shows?
Favorite movie is Grease. Favorite TV show is The Walking Dead.
Favorite magazine/book?
Favorite book is Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts. A touching and heart-warming book to read.
Favorite food?I’m a fan of many types of food but sushi is hands down my favorite.
Describe your perfect day off?
My perfect day off is just being home. I’m a homebody. I enjoy being in my own space and relaxing.
In the News...
GCC’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility is being noticed beyond our district. Insight Into Equity, a magazine devoted to DEIA efforts in higher education, interviewed Dr. Michael Ritterbrown along with representatives from Harvard University and Colorado State University. You can read the entire article “Equity in the Classroom Leads to Greater Student Success” by clicking here. Look for several photos of students in Sandy Somo’s classroom taken in 2019.
A recent online article highlighted GCC’s efforts to create job opportunities for people with disabilities. The California Workforce Association (CWA) interviewed Alfred Ramirez, Administrative Dean, Continuing and Community Education about the partnerships built through GlendaleLEARNS, the regional collaborative for Glendale under the California Adult Education Program (CAEP) which also includes the Verdugo Workforce Development Board and GUSD. The article notes the positive impact that the CNC Machinist Academy had while it was run through GCC prior to the pandemic.
