Student Town Hall Featuring Rep. Adam Schiff
On Tuesday, May 5, 2020, the Associate Students (ASGCC) hosted a student town hall event with special guest U.S. Representative Adam Schiff. The congressman, who represents portions of Glendale and Burbank, formerly taught political science at GCC as an adjunct faculty member. Rep Schiff spent an hour fielding questions from students and others regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and what the federal government is doing to assist college students and colleges. If you missed it, you can watch via this link.
Connecting Students
The move to remote learning has been largely successful, but not every student has access to a computer or the internet. Library staff has been working diligently to acquire laptops, ChromeBooks, and hotspot devices to loan to students in need of connectivity. So far, staff has distributed more than 535 pieces of equipment to students on the Verdugo and Garfield campuses. If you know of a student in need, please have them submit their laptop request online at glendale.edu/laptopcheckout.
Free Online Textbooks
Now, more than ever, it’s important that our students have access to as many of their textbooks as possible at a time when they cannot use physical books. Thanks to the efforts of our GCC librarians, free online textbooks are being offered through various databases, including VitalSource, RedShelf and other platforms. Not all textbooks are available, however, faculty can fill out the Online Book Request Form. A librarian will search for online access to the requested book(s), including library reserves and other requested titles that are not on the Bookstore Textbook List. Information for students and faculty regarding free online textbooks can be found on the Library website at www.glendale.edu/library.
Building a Bridge Between High School and GCC
The GCC Dual Enrollment program is an early college enrollment opportunity allowing students to take free college classes at their high school. Thanks to partnerships with local K-12 districts, high school students have the opportunity to earn college and high school credit at the same time.
Spring 2020 dual enrollment classes were of high interest to high school students, yielding 525 enrolled students. High school students are also showing a high interest in summer classes. There are 16 new sections dedicated for concurrent enrollment. Students can find class listings and new paperless enrollment steps at www.glendale.edu/dual
Additional support to Dual Enrollment students is available from the Virtual GCC Welcome Center Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.

Student Athletes Compete to Complete
On March 12 the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) announced the postponement of all Spring sports and a week later officially cancelled the Spring season. Despite the disappointment and an unforeseeable future, coaches, support staff, and Center for Academic Success (CASA) challenged our student athletes to compete academically in new remote platform. So far, our student athletes are winning with a unit retention rate of nearly 95% since the start of the pandemic. The final grades and completion rates will be our only benchmarks of success for this Spring semester,” said Associate Dean of Athletics Chris Cicuto. “This fourth quarter, ninth inning or last leg of the race, so to speak, will be the deciding factor in this remote competition.” With finals quickly approaching, we’re rooting for the students to maintain the impressive retention rate.
