Vax Mandate Update
On Thursday, August 25, the college discontinued the vaccination check-in stations at the Verdugo and Garfield Campuses. However, GCC’s COVID-19 policies and protocols remain in effect for the health and safety of all members of the college community. All students taking in-person classes and accessing in-person services are still required to be fully vaccinated. All students, employees and visitors must wear a protective mask over their mouth and nose while inside GCC buildings. Social distancing is not required. For the latest GCC COVID-19 information go to glendale.edu/vaxmandate.

The fall semester kicked off Monday, August 29 with a noticeable increase in the number of students and GCC employees connecting in person. A week earlier, welcome events set the tone at both the Verdugo and Garfield Campuses. The festivities continued the first week of school with a number of gatherings, including the College President and Student Trustee BBQ. The Associated Students of GCC hosted the event to allow students to meet new Superintendent/President Ryan Cornner and the ASGCC leadership team. Check out the events by clicking on the albums below.

GCC Alumni: After the Bridge
GCC alum Teni Anbarchian is making her mark at Stanford University where she’s currently studying to become an MD. Teni’s experience as a community college transfer student to UCLA and now Stanford inspired her to help create Stanford’s Community College Outreach Program (CCOP) to help transfers with the application process and secure internships at Stanford Medicine. You can read about it here.Construction Closes Parking Lots on Verdugo
The Central Plant 1 project on the Verdugo Campus requires trenching to cross the Circle Drive entrance. For the safety of students and employees, parking in Circle Drive, Lot H and Lot I are closed through Friday, October 7. You can get more details here.
While You Are Away
Garfield Parking Expands
The Garfield Campus is now flush with parking following the completion of the parking lot project on the now expanded property. Measure GC funds have added more than 250 parking spaces which helps alleviate a lack of parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Previously, drivers would circle the block looking for parking and create more traffic and pollution. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place later this month. Watch for the announcement in the coming days.

Connecting with...Erica Perez
Erica Perez was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Glendale where she began attending school in kindergarten. She first joined the GCC family in 2016 as a part-time Facilities employee and moved to full time four years ago. While many of us have been logging hours remotely during the pandemic, Erica and her fellow GCC custodians have been working in person the entire time. Her workday on campus begins at 4:30 a.m., while most of us are still sound asleep. She can be found most mornings working on the first floor of the Sierra Vista Building. The next time you stop for coffee in The Learning Commons and admire the beautiful facility, thank Erica for ensuring that it looks immaculate.
Why did you choose to work at GCC?
I was looking for a job and I saw the listing for part time general worker and I thought, why not work at the college in my city?
Do you have a favorite memory working at GCC?
I love working here. Every moment is something good or something new. I’ve never had a bad experience here. All the memories are good.
Hobbies: I love being with my kids. I have three kids and I enjoy time with them going hiking and going to new places. They are 13, 11 and 9 years old. They are at the age where they are willing to do stuff.
Favorite movies/TV Shows: I don’t have any, but probably the kids’ cartoons.
Favorite food: I love to eat hamburgers!
Describe your perfect day off: My perfect day off is making breakfast for my kids, going out with them and enjoying the time I have with them. I’m a single mother that works two jobs so I don’t get see them as much as I want. Any time I have the opportunity to be with them I take advantage.
