If a student has a disability and needs accommodations, they should contact Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) as soon as possible so that special accommodations can be arranged.  Examples of such accommodations are:

• Extended test time
• A quiet, distraction-free environment to take exams
• In-class note takers
• In-class sign language specialists
• Assistants for those with visual impairments 
• Dedicated tutors
• Temporary disabled status (recovering from surgery, etc.)
• And more!

You may have students in class who you suspect may have a disability and may benefit from meeting with DSPS.  In such cases, you can gently suggest that the student contact DSPS to just chat about different options such as extended exam time or a quieter testing environment.  It's generally not a good idea to tell students you think they have a disability.

If a student in your class gets special accommodations because of a disability, DSPS will notify you by email outlining all the accommodations.  DSPS will arrange all testing accommodations, but you will sometimes need to ask the class for a volunteer note taker.  DSPS will work out arrangements with you such as how to deliver and retrieve exams.

Do not provide students accommodations for a disability without the approval of DSPS!  All students with disabilities must go through DSPS, and instructors must adhere to any DSPS accommodations. If a student mentions to an instructor that they receive services from DSPS and then requests on their own behalf extended test and quiz time, the instructor should respond to that student, "Please contact ARC (Accommodations Resource Center, SG 108/112) and have a Specialist send me a Test Authorization Form". Accommodations are given based on the student's presenting disability.
