Office Hours

Adjunct Faculty are required to hold paid office hours. You are paid for your office hours from the first day of classes through the final day of the semester, including the week of final exams. The number of weekly office hours you are responsible for is equal to 5 times the percentage of full-time load that you are teaching. A quick formula to determine your number of weekly office hours is:

LaTeX: \text{weekly office hours}=\frac{\text{number of units you are teaching}}{\text{full-time load for your division}}\cdot5

Full-time load in credit divisions range between 14 and 24 units. Most divisions/departments have 15 units for full-time load, but check with your Division Chair to be sure.

Ask your division about office spaces available to adjunct faculty members. It is often an option to use the same classroom you teach in to hold office hours as long as there is no class just before or after. Ask your division's administrative assistant to check availability and to schedule office hours in the classroom.

Another option is to hold synchronous office hours online - talk to your division if you're interested in this option.

You can hold your office hours in one of two Adjunct Faculty Centers. The first is in SG 140, which is on the ground floor of the San Gabriel Building, and the second is on the second floor of the San Rafael Building in SR 236. These spaces include adjunct faculty desks, several computers, and printers. See the Adjunct Office Space Page for more information. Finally, you may be able to meet students elsewhere on campus (run this by your division chair). For example, you could meet students at a table by the campus coffee kiosk as long you can consistently be found at that location.

Whatever you choose for office hours, make sure you make the time and location clear to your division and include them on your syllabus. Additionally, report your office hours online for the school-wide database at www.glendale.edu/facultyofficehours.
