Amount: $5 Million ($1,000,000/year for 5 years)

Goals:

1. Develop model STEM Learning and Professional Pathway (LPP) with emphasis on closing academic and career opportunity gaps for Hispanics students.
2. Actualize servingness through a career-first approach to organizing GCC's STEM Learning and Professional Pathway, providing Hispanic students with a springboard to in-demand careers in STEM.
3. Develop and enrich strategic institutional and industry partnerships through a new Alliance for Equity in STEM Careers focused on sustaining and scaling accessibility of academic and career pathways in STEM.

Strategy #1: STEM Transition Network

• STEM Summer Bridge: Offer contextualized Student Development 101, field trips, faculty demonstrations, careers panels, and an open house

• STEM Welcome Week: Create a calendar of events for one week before/after the start of the fall semester that will feature career panels, support workshops, opportunities to connect informally with faculty and peers, and a bilingual family workshop

• Peer mentoring: Strategically connect more experienced students with incoming students using an established model. Help faculty identify, encourage, and recruit students of promise in STEM for mentoring (and experiential learning opportunities)

• Success Teams: Further develop and expand the capacity of the STEM Learning and Professional Pathway (LPP) Success Team by integrating instructional faculty, classified professionals, and student workers

• STEM Ambassadors: STEM students will work with the Faculty Coordinator for High School Collaboratives to offer outreach and informational sessions about STEM opportunities at GCC as well as pilot an after-school program/club led by GCC STEM students

Strategy #2: Enriching and Engaging STEM Experience

• Classes as Internships: Expand the number of credit-bearing classes that provide work-based learning or research opportunities. This will include existing research classes within biology and chemistry, but also newly created experiences (Team Internships and Go Baby Go)

• Contextualized STEM Classes: Develop new contextualized courses like Statistics for Data Science, Ethics for Data Science, with a focus on Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

• Classes with Field Trips: Encourage and assist faculty with finding engaging experiences off-campus that connect students with nature or future employers

• STEM Enrichment: Create new STEM clubs (SACNAS, SWE, SHPE) and collaborate with the Science Lecture Series

• Data Science: Expand awareness of new Data Science pathways (Certificate in Data Analytics and AS in Data Science) and collaborate with non-STEM faculty to infuse data science modules into their course content

Strategy #3: Career Partnerships

• Industry Advisory Panels in STEM: Adapt the model from Career Education Advisory Boards for all STEM disciplines to inform curriculum development and work-based learning experiences. The Alliance for Equity in STEM Careers will be more virtual events distributed over the course of the academic year.

• Student Showcases: Invite industry partners to network with students and become familiar with their portfolio of work.

• Job Fair: Collaborate with Career Services to raise awareness of job fair and careers available for STEM students

• Regular Updates to College Central Network: Establish student teams to help update STEM jobs on College Central Network
