“I am typing this from a lab bench at UCSC in a lab with dozens of publications (Howard Hughes Medical Institute lab)…Your research experience was amazing. It was very detailed, very well planned, and really hands on. The learning experience was one of no comparison, especially in the friendly environment we were in, while still being fast-paced and scientifically rigorous…presenting our research, and reading half a dozen scientific publications was a great tool to come into this lab…The PI, post-docs, and my fellow undergrads were astonished that I had done undergrad research at my JC…”
~Santiago Sanchez @ UC Santa Cruz, earned Master Degree from same lab.
…helped me gain more confidence in my lab skills as well as helping become familiar with concepts that I encountered in my upper division courses.
~Martin Zakarian, UCLA; Finishing Med School
Bio 298 was my first research experience, and it taught me not only crucial lab skills that I needed to be at par or even ahead of my schoolmates at the university level. More than that, it highlighted the importance of keeping at it when you encounter unwanted results and being able to adjust and modify your methods to address the problem. These are traits that I started developing then and have benefited me in life, and more specifically, in the process of applying to medical school, and now in studying to be a physician.
~Des Espanta @ UCLA; Finishing Med School
“A lot of my peers are shocked to hear how I already have research experience and many were quite impressed…Taking the undergraduate research has helped me specially in my Biochemistry and Genetics courses…doing research over the summer has made it a little easier for me to understand what’s going on in my upper division science classes.”
~James Velandria @ UC Davies; Finishing Med School
It also looked great on my CV and I was able to get a paid position in a microbiology lab after I transferred to UCR.
~Nareh Avedian, UCR; Dentist
As a transfer student, it is very difficult to find a research position. Taking Bio 298 research enabled me to become a student researcher at one of the best molecular labs in the Orthopedic surgery department. I was able to graduate with College and Departmental honors.
~Gayaneh Nazarian, UCLA; Med. Student
… I was one of the first students from GCC that got accepted to the Biomedical Research Minor at UCLA, a very competitive minor, and found a dream lab to join…My interest for research has grown exponentially ever since I had that course and so much that I am seriously considering doing Pharm.D/Ph.D …
~Jennifer Pham, UCLA; MS in Public Health; Finishing PharmD program, June 2024
…I discovered my passion for scientific research. I made life long friends. I developed the confidence in my abilities and got to learn practical skills that are used in nearly every professional lab.
~Luke Butcher, UCLA; 4th year Med student
The analytical skills that I acquired gave me the confidence to work even more sophisticated and rigorous labs at UCLA and excel within the lab, leading to me receiving more independent projects and eventually to me acquiring a job as a Staff Research Associate II.
~Firas Hikmat, UCLA; 3rd year Med Student
