Introduction to College Reading and Composition
A Guide to Our Two Course Offerings:
English 101 and English 101+
At GCC, we offer two options for students taking our introductory composition course:
English 101 or English 101+
All students are able to register for English 101 or English 101+.
Both English 101 and English 101 are credit-bearing, transfer-level courses you can use to fulfill your degree requirement for graduation or to transfer to a university.
Which course is right for you?
English 101 is a 4-unit course designed to prepare you for writing in the university setting and for a variety of contexts beyond the classroom. In this course, you will practice critical thinking, reading, and writing by applying a variety of strategies that enhance your work as a communicator, citizen, and scholar.
Through reading and discussion of selected works, you will learn to
- identify arguments and
- analyze texts for purpose, audience, context, and overall composition.
Through writing, you are invited to contribute to an academic conversation and learn to position your ideas in relation to the ideas of others. You will also develop skills in
- argumentation,
- source integration,
- analysis of evidence,
- college-level research methods,
- information literacy, and
- citing according to academic conventions.
