GRAMMAR & WRITING GUIDE FOR STUDENT PLACEMENT

To help you decide which level of Credit ESL grammar and writing class you should choose, use this chart. It explains what you should already know when you enter each level and what you will study in each level.

ESL 111: Grammar and Writing I

You should already know:
  • “be” and “have” verbs in Simple Present
  • Parts of Speech
  • Basic sentence structure
  • Basic paragraph format (Write at least 50 words in one hour.)
You will study in more detail:
  • Simple Present, Simple Past, Simple Future
  • Present Progressive, Past Progressive
  • Modals: Ability (can/could)
  • Adverb Clause of Time
  • Simple Sentence and Compound Sentence
  • Basic Academic Paragraph Format (Write at least 100 words in one hour.)

ESL 123: Grammar and Writing II

You should already know:
  • Simple Present
  • Simple Past: regular verbs
  • Simple Future
  • Simple sentence
  • Paragraph Format (Write at least 100 words in one hour.)
You will study in more detail:
  • Simple Present, Simple Past, Simple Future
  • Present Progressive, Past Progressive
  • Modals: Ability, future possibility, advice, necessity
  • Adverb Clause of Time and reason
  • Simple Sentence and Compound Sentence
  • Academic Paragraph Development (Write at least 200 words in one hour.)

ESL 133: Grammar and Writing III

You should already know:
  • Simple Present, Simple Past, Simple Future
  • Present Progressive and Past Progressive
  • Simple Sentence and Compound Sentence
  • Paragraph Format and development (Write at least 200 words in one hour.)
You will study in more detail:
  • Present Perfect and Present Perfect Progressive
  • Passive Voice
  • Complex Sentences: Adverb Clauses, Adjective Clauses, Noun Clauses (object position)
  • Gerunds and Infinitives
  • Punctuation Patterns
  • Transition Words and Phrases
  • Basic Academic Essay Format and Development (Write at least 300 words in one hour.)

ESL 141: Grammar and Writing IV

You should already know:
  • Simple Present, Simple Past, Simple Future, Present Progressive, Past Progressive, Present Perfect, Present Perfect Progressive
  • Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences
  • Adverb, Adjective, and Noun Clauses
  • Passive Voice
  • Gerunds and Infinitives
  • Basic Essay Format (Write at least 300 words in one hour.)
You will study in more detail:
  • Present Perfect, Present Perfect Progressive, Past Perfect
  • Passive Voice
  • Complex Sentences: Adverb Clauses, Adjective Clauses, Noun Clauses
  • Conditional Adverb Clauses (real and unreal)
  • Gerunds and Infinitives (advanced)
  • Punctuation Patterns (advanced)
  • Transition Words and Phrases
  • Sentence Variety
  • Academic Essay Format and Development (Write at least 400 words in two hours.)

ESL 151: Reading and Composition

You should already know:
  • All grammar studied in previous levels
  • Academic Essay Format and Development: Essay with introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion
You will study in more detail:
  • Editing skills
  • Advanced Academic Essay Format and Development
  • Research paper
