Internships: Look for internships that have to do with public safety or medicine.
Volunteer: Police or fire department, hospitals, community service programs all have volunteer opportunities. Make yourself known to professionals.
Work: Look for work as a cadet or other entry level positions.
Shadow and Mentorship: Contact for a ride along or shadow. Most organizations are happy to help teach students about opportunities. Finding a mentor, someone to push you and grow you will be helpful when it comes to interviewing well and gaining open positions.
Networking: Meet other professionals to learn about the occupation and other specialties within the field. Making connections to a professional will help grow your knowledge and begin to grow.
Background Checks: Most public service jobs (Police, Probation, FBI, etc.) have a very strict and extensive background check. Be open and honest with a mentor or a professional about your background and concerns that may stop candidates from those jobs.
