Internships: Seek out opportunities to work with and help people. Look at local government programs, after school programs, nonprofits, etc.
Volunteer: Find opportunities in the specialized are you are thinking about: hospitals, schools, clinics, day cares, libraries, etc. Also look for opportunities to work with the population you are considering focusing on: children, teenagers, elderly, homeless, etc.
Work: Entry level jobs like front desk assistant or teaching aide might be helpful in discovering what jobs might be like.
Mentorship and Networking: Seek out a professional mentor and a network of like-minded professionalis to get to know and learn from. This can open up opportunities down the road.
Graduate School: Research education needed for your chosen career. Advanced degrees may be necessary for various careers or for better knowledge.
