Exploring the Evolutionary Loss of Cervical Vertebrae in Deep-Sea Dragonfishes (Stomiiformes) Using a Clearing and Staining Technique |
Alex learned how to use a clearing and staining technique, where muscle tissue is digested using trypsin (a protease), while differentially staining bone and cartilage using alizarin red and alcian blue, respectively. This technique makes the fishes transparent, so their skeleton can be studied under a dissecting microscope. He compared the structure of the cervical vertebrate in Stomiiformes with several outgroups in order to understand the evolutionary loss of cervical vertebrae. |
