Geography 102: Cultural Geography (3 units) taught by Prof. Laura Englund-Krusee
This course introduces students to the development and distribution of major cultural elements across the planet, including the world’s religions, languages, agriculture, environmental issues, economic activities, trade patterns and their global interconnections. Bali is the perfect setting to study these aspects of culture through lectures, observations and fun activities like cooking classes, rice field treks, countryside bike treks, temple visits, cultural performances and artistic workshops. We’ll also have time for snorkeling trips and waterfall treks in this unique and beautiful region of the world.
Culinary Arts 48: Culinary Arts Field Studies (2 units) taught by Chef Andrew Feldman
This experiential course explores Bali’s rich cultural and culinary traditions, offering insights into the island’s unique religious and communal practices, where food plays a central role in ceremonies and festivals. The intricate use of spices and fresh, locally sourced ingredients enhances culinary skills and promotes sustainable eating practices. Traditional agricultural methods and food preparation techniques are studied along with a deep dive into the blend of Indian, Chinese, and Southeast Asian influences found in Balinese dishes, enriching the understanding of global culinary connections. Health-
conscious individuals will benefit from the use of herbs and spices known for their medicinal properties. Balinese cuisine embodies a fusion of culture, history, and sustainable living, making it a fascinating and delicious area of study.
Participants must be eligible to enroll in the program courses. Under certain circumstances, such as when the class has already been completed at GCC within the past 5 years, an Independent Study course may be an option subject to approval by a program instructor.
Most participants will be 18 years or older. Accommodation can sometimes be made for those under 18 with parental permission and recommendation from a counselor.
A pre-departure conference will be conducted by the Study Abroad program director(s) and/or Program Faculty before a student is admitted to a program.
Students should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and no history of disciplinary action at GCC or any other campus. Exceptions may be granted by the Study Abroad Director.
Students will be notified promptly in writing should they not be accepted into a program.
Program participants will be required to sign the forms “General Release of Liability” and “Assumption of Risk for Participation in Voluntary Activity.”
Students do not need to have a declared major in the classes they are taking abroad and there are no language prerequisites for the programs unless a specific course has its own requirement
