England Summer 2024
This 5-week summer session program begins with a week of classes on the GCC campus before departing to London on June 23rd. We arrive in England on June 24th and transfer to University College London, where we will be based for the remainder of the program for our accommodations and classes. This very central location provides easy access to public buses, underground and railway stations, allowing you to explore London’s major iconic landmarks and rich history as you immerse yourself in the British culture that blends centuries-old traditions with modern innovation. Explore the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Covent Garden, Piccadilly Circus, London Bridge, Hyde Park, Shakespeare's Globe Theater and the National Portrait Gallery. Dive into the local culture, visit cinematic touchstones, and experience international cuisine, while earning transferable college credit.

PROGRAM COSTS: $3,395
Program Fee Includes:
- Accommodation for 25 nights (single rooms, private bathroom and shared kitchens) at University College London.
- Group airport transfers and coach transportation.
- London Oyster card for transportation within Zones 1 & 2
- Side trips to Stonehenge, Salisbury, Oxford and Stratford-Upon-Avon
- Welcome dinner, farewell dinner and 12 lunches
Price Does Not Include:
- Airfare from LAX to London (approx. $1,300 if purchased early)
- GCC tuition for 5 units of coursework (non-residents are required to pay out-of-state fees)
- Mandatory travel insurance (estimated $75 depending on coverage limits and age)
- Textbooks
- Most meals and beverages
- Visas (if required)
- Any Covid-19 quarantine expenses or testing for airlines and country entry requirements (if needed)
- Personal expenses
- Excursions and entry fees beyond those listed
- Anything not specified as “included”

If you cancel, all payments are considered non-refundable. However, if we find a qualified replacement for your spot a refund will be issued minus any non-recoverable costs.
Space is limited to approximately 24 students, so act quickly.
Additional charges may be incurred for late payments or returned checks.
Students must enroll in both courses offered as part of this program (5 credit units).
Psychology 101: General Psychology (3 units) taught by Michelle Calderwood
Dive into Psychology 101! Gain insight into human mind as you investigate topics ranging from cognitive psychology to behavioral analysis. Topics include the biological bases of behavior, perception, cognition, consciousness, memory, emotion, motivation, personality, social psychology, psychological disorders, approaches to psychotherapy, and applied psychology. Visit the Freud Museum.
Anthropology 48: Field Studies (2 units) taught by Prof. Wendy Fonarow
Discover British Culture through Anthropology Field Studies: Immerse yourself in the kaleidoscope of cultural practices, ethnicities, and heritage that make London a global epicenter. In the Anthropology Field Studies course you will learn about the variety of British dialects, the custom of afternoon tea, unrivaled theater and music, and centrality of pub life. From the nightlife of Soho to the historic landmarks of Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the River Thames, from the architecture of Notting Hill to the manicured gardens of Regent Park, from traditional Sunday roast dinner to the street foods of Borough Markets, from the winding alleys of Jack the Ripper's Whitechapel to Sherlock Holmes' Baker Street, London offers unparalleled opportunities to gain firsthand understanding of the modern Britain life and significance.

Most participants will be 18 years or older. Accommodations can be made for those under 18 with parental permission and recommendation from a counselor.
A pre-departure conference with each student by the Study Abroad program director must be held. When a concern is raised, an instructor can ask the Study Abroad Director to conduct the conference before a student is admitted to a program.
Students should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and no history of disciplinary action at GCC or any other campus. Exceptions may be granted by the Study Abroad Director.
Students will be notified promptly in writing should they not be accepted into a program.
Program participants will be required to sign the forms “General Release of Liability” and “Assumption of Risk for Participation in Voluntary Activity.”
Students do not need to have a declared major in the classes they are taking abroad and there are no language prerequisites for the programs unless a specific course has its own requirement.
