The Art Gallery @ GCC presents: Packed & Jammed, co-curated by Jay Erker and Michelle Carla Handel, November 4 – December 4, 2014.
Opening reception on November 8
Packed and Jammed features nine Los Angeles-based artists who have been invited to create works that respond to the architecture of The Art Gallery @ GCC. Based on their previous work, the artists in the show have created site-specific work that explores themes of transformation, alterity, metamorphosis, and flux. Fusing text, found objects, and domestic as well as construction materials, the exhibition presents various dynamic works wherein traditional modes of materiality are addressed, reworked, and occasionally undermined. The end result is an interconnected series of visual structures that address and play upon shifting contemporary understandings of phenomenology, objectivity, cognition, and space.
Participating installation artists include Janne Larsen, Amy Green, Sophie Lee, Megan Geckler, Clifford Eberly, Jon-Paul Villegas, Karen Lofgren, and Chris Niemi. A site-specific sound performance by Geneva Skeen will be performed during the opening of the show.
