New Student Orientation

Orientation is REQUIRED for all new to college students.

Glendale College offers new student orientation in these formats:

Online - Canvas (log thru your myGCC student account, learn at your own pace);
Summer Bridge: Student Development 101 (part of Promise+ program);
New Student Advising Sessions (online/on-campus) - for late registration (August).

Notes:
1. International students must enroll in Student Development 103 – International Students

2. Four-year university students/graduates or students taking classes for personal enrichment do not have to complete the orientation, unless they applied as new students or want to have access to priority registration.

The new student orientation is a program designed to guide you through your first semester, plan you coursework and register in classes, and to prepare you to become a successful student at Glendale Community College. You will also learn how to access and use a variety of academic and support services designed to ease the transition into a college environment.

Final Note: In order to be eligible for priority registration (earlier appointment to enroll) you must complete the orientation and develop an abbreviated education plan (SEP) by the required deadlines (see New Student Guide).

Online Orientation

Please follow the guide below to complete the orientation and be ready to register for classes:

Step 1 Make sure you have an up-to-date Glendale College application on file with the Admissions office prior to completing this orientation. We cannot give you credit for the orientation until you have been assigned a Glendale College student ID number. Click here for the GCC application.

Step 2 Log into your myGCC student account and look for the Orientation tile. You will be directed to Canvas course entitled New Student Orientation.

Step 3 You are now ready to begin exploring Glendale College! You may read each of the nine sections at your own pace, but you must finish the entire program in order to get credit. Read through the information carefully. You will encounter short quizzes that will test your understanding of the information presented. The purpose of these quizzes is simply to provide you with immediate feedback to see if you are ready to move on to the next component. Please note that all quizzes must be completed for you to receive credit for the online orientation.

The orientation is divided into sections and pages. Each section contains information on a specific topic, such as "Pathways at GCC" or "Getting Involved."

You should read the text on each page as it contains important information. Some chapters begin with tutorial videos you also need to view as they help you to better understand the material presented.

Although the online orientation may take about 45 minutes to complete, please note that you can log off and back on after completing each section and the system will save your place in the orientation while the Orientation tile will remind you to continue and complete the program.

SUMMER BRIDGE

STDV 101 - College Success Strategies

This course is dedicated to ensuring students’ college success and motivating their journeys toward lifelong learning. Students develop their own plan for personal, academic, and career success through self-evaluation, application of specific techniques, and classroom activities. Topics include effective study strategies, short and long-term goals, time management, and campus resources. This course is about making choices, especially those about setting and meeting personal, academic, and career goals.

EOPS

STDV 100 - College Orientation

This is an introductory college orientation course for newly enrolled and matriculated students. The course covers the following topics: college academic regulations; four-year schools’ requirements for transfer; A.A. degree requirements; certificate program requirements; college services and specialized student support services. At the conclusion of the course, the student prepares a Student Educational Plan. EOPS students must complete this course during their first year at GCC.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

STDV 103 - College Orientation for International Students

International students are encouraged to enroll in this course during their first semester at GCC. It is designed to introduce them to customs unique to the American culture, prevalent American attitudes, United States Immigration regulations affecting F-1 Visa students, and general principles for living and studying in the United States of America. Additionally, the course covers college academic regulations, requirements for transfer to four-year colleges and universities, college services, and specialized student support services. At the conclusion of the course, the student is able to produce a Student Educational Plan.
