ESL Placement

If you’ve attended a non-U.S. high school where English wasn’t the main language-of-instruction, or if your primary language spoken has not been English, you may find the credit ESL pathway is a better option for you. To help determine which level of credit ESL course is right for you, or to see if English 101 or 101+ is a better fit, GCC’s faculty have developed an ESL Self Placement Survey (SPS).

The ESL SPS is a set of questions that will help you choose the right path and will also allow you to place into a higher ESL course or level if the level you choose is too easy for you. All students with a U.S. diploma or equivalent are entitled to access transfer-level English 101 or 101+, but any student wishing to take the ESL SPS is welcome to do so. You may choose to consult the GRAMMAR & WRITING GUIDE FOR STUDENT PLACEMENT before you take the ESL Survey.

To take the ESL Survey, go to myGCC > Other Services> my Credit ESL SPS.
