Math Placement

SLAM Pathways (Statistics and Liberal Arts Math) 

At GCC, all students are able to take Math 135 (Math Ideas), Math 136+ (Statistics), and Math 138* (Math for Elementary Teachers). These courses are transfer-level and appropriate for students who have career/educational goals in the “SLAM” pathway, which includes majors like Early/K-5 Education, Graphic Design, Museum Curator, Journalism, Law Enforcement, Nursing, Public Relations, Sociologist, Screenwriter.

However, you may be eligible to take a more advanced math class. Please check your math placement in MyGCC.

STEM Pathways (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) 

At GCC, all students are able to take 102+ (Trigonometry with Support), and 100 (College Algebra). For students interested in the “BSTEM” pathway, which includes majors like Biology, Computer Science, Data Science, Dentistry, Engineering, Food Chemist, Medicine, students must meet GCC’s specific placement criteria for the various STEM transfer-level courses. 

Business Pathways 

At GCC, all students are able to take Math 111 (College Algebra for Business and Liberal Arts). For students interested in the “Business” pathway, which includes majors like Accounting, Architecture, and Economics, students must meet GCC’s specific placement criteria for the various Business transfer-level courses. 

Many students will have access to Business and STEM transfer-level courses like Math 112/112+ (Calculus for Business) or Math 110/Math 110 A & B** (Precalculus) depending on their academic record (overall GPA and/or math course history).

NOTES: 

*- All students are placed into Math 138 automatically, but Math 138 is generally appropriate/necessary only for those students who are seeking to become elementary school teachers. 

**- Math 110A and Math 110B are two-semester versions of Math 110 and all three cover the subject of Precalculus. Different placement criteria apply to Math 110 and 110A&B.
