Career Summary

Art History is the study of art in all its forms and genres created throughout human history by individuals from various cultures and parts of the world. Those who major in art history seek to understand and interpret a wide range of works of art by researching artists’ lives, particular art trends and movements, political and social climate of a certain time period, and the influence of these subjective and objective forces on the art field. Those who possess a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History may find employment in museums, galleries, auction houses, publishing companies, Federal and State government agencies, and educational institutions. Undergraduate Art History alumnae may enroll in a variety of graduate programs and pursue careers in law, government, or business. Coincidently, Law, medical, and other professional schools strongly favor applicants with a broad educational foundation and diverse intellectual background rooted in both, sciences and humanities. 

Program Description

The GCC Art History classes provide a comprehensive overview of diverse forms of artistic heritage and traditions, including architecture, painting, and sculpture from prehistoric to modern times in the Mediterranean, Europe, and the United States and what they reveal about the cultures and societies which produced them. The coursework focuses on the social role of major visual arts movements and their impact on the human development. It also examines the philosophical ideas, economic trends, and political events that defined the art of a particular period and cultures. The Art History curriculum will enable the student to develop visual, analytical, and communication skills and could, for example, prepare the individual to become an Art Museum docent. The word docent originates from the Latin word docere which means to teach. Docents serve as museum guides who conduct tours of museum collections and assist with educational events and community outreach programs. A Bachelor’s degree in Art History will enhance individual’s chances of employment and career advancement.
