There are several types of financial aid that can help you afford transferring to a four-year college/university. Some of them are listed below.
Note: To qualify for most types of aid, you need to submit either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the CA Dream Act Application (CADAA).
Grants and scholarships are free aid (otherwise known as “gift aid”), meaning they don’t need to be paid back. In general, grants are given based on financial need, while scholarships are merit-based and awarded to students based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, field of study, and more.
Qualifying for grants starts with filling out the FAFSA or CADAA, which determines how much financial assistance you need based on factors like your household income. After filing a FAFSA, you’re automatically considered for federal and state grants. Students filling out the CADAA, are only considered for state grants.
Common grants:
- Pell Grant
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
- Cal Grant
- University grants
Scholarships can be offered by universities and other organizations.
When applying, the requirements and deadline depend on the specific scholarship. Many require an essay to be written, but it really can vary by type of scholarship. Be sure to thoroughly read through the scholarship website and application to ensure you’re fulfilling all the requirements. Some scholarship deadlines are up to a year before you graduate, so it’s recommended to start doing your research sooner rather than later.

Hundreds of institutions use CSS Profile as a common application for nonfederal financial aid, reducing the number of times a student may need to fill out institution financial aid applications at multiple institutions.
You can view which colleges/universities use CSS Profile as part of their financial aid process here.
NACAC offers application fee waivers allowing students with limited financial resources to apply for college. Similar to NACAC’s current application fee waiver, the enrollment deposit waiver is used by students to request a fee waiver or deferral.
