Rep. Schiff Secures $1.2M for Support Program

Some of GCC’s most at-risk students will be getting additional support thanks to Congressman Adam Schiff who announced he’s secured $1.25 million for support services for low-income and unhoused GCC students.

More than half of GCC students face insecurity and nearly one in seven experience homelessness making it difficult to complete their educational goals. In 2021, Glendale City Council approved a $1.3 million grant to provide rental assistance to at-risk GCC students who live within Glendale city limits. The federal funds secured by Congressman Schiff will support students who live outside Glendale and will also help with employment assistance and other services.

Connecting with...Nicholas Allen

Nicholas AllenNicholas Allen, or Nick to most people, works as a Police Officer for the GCC Police Department. He has been part of the department for 13 years, on both the sworn side as a Police Officer and on the non-sworn/civilian side as a Police Cadet. He graduated from GCC in 2013 with an Associate in Administration of Justice degree. After taking time off from school to pursue a career, Nick graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cal State LA in 2022 with a BA in Sociology with an emphasis on Inequalities and Diversity.

Why did you choose to work at GCC?
I started working at GCC in 2010 as a Police Cadet. I chose GCC because I heard that their cadet program was one of the best and would prepare me very well for a career in law enforcement. After working as a cadet for 5.5 years, I was given the opportunity to apply for Police Officer and I did not hesitate to do so. Working for GCCPD was my first job when I was 18 years old and going to school and I feel that it is only right to give back to the campus community that has taught me, and continues to teach me, so much. I thoroughly enjoy working at GCC because I get to interact with the students, staff, faculty and the campus community as a whole on a daily basis.

Do you have a favorite memory working at GCC?
My favorite memory has to be when I became friends with this one older GCC student. I had daily interactions with her on patrol and one day she had a medical issue that I assisted with and got her medical help.  A few weeks went by, and I finally saw her and asked how she was doing. She told me that she is doing well and that she is surprised to be friends with a police officer because her son was killed by police many years ago. I have not seen her in many years, but I still have the Christmas card that she gave me thanking me for helping her and showing her that not all police officers are bad. I carry that card with me on patrol every day to remind me why I chose to do this job.

One thing about you that might surprise your co-workers?
I have a twin sister.

Hobbies?
I love being with my family and doing some outdoor activity. I also really enjoy playing video games, baseball and woodworking.

Favorite movies/TV Shows?
Favorite movie would be The Sandlot and favorite TV show is hands-down The Office.

Favorite magazine/book?
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Favorite food?
Chicken Nuggets

Describe your perfect day off?
Spending the day with my family relaxing or doing something fun together.
