Student and Employee Survey Results Are Here
The Research, Planning and Grants Office conducts regular surveys of students and faculty/staff to help measure and enhance institutional effectiveness. This year’s inquiry included questions regarding remote instruction and the impact it is having on all of us.
Taskforce Creates the Equitable Curriculum Guide
Francien Rohrbacher, Professor of English and Humanities and Curriculum Coordinator describes the creation of the Equitable Curriculum Guide: In spring 2020, GCC's Curriculum and Instruction Committee (C&I) decided to create an equitable curriculum guide for the GCC community. This decision was made in tandem with GCC's response to calls for social justice that resulted from the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others, at the hands of law enforcement and civilians. We as a committee realized that we needed to play a role in helping GCC fulfill its mission to address students' needs through diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible (DEIA) practices. As a result, we formed a taskforce comprised of faculty from various disciplines who had knowledge and experience with antiracist and culturally responsive teaching pedagogy. The taskforce met every week from June through December 2020 and finalized the Equity Guide over winter session 2021 (we also consulted with our colleagues in DSPS, Noncredit, and Career and Workforce Development). Looking forward, C&I will be hosting workshops on a regular basis to help faculty and staff use the Equity Guide to create curriculum and other student/public-facing documents that align with DEIA principles. And as we learn more from our students and each other, we will revise and update the Equity Guide and create a repository of course/program outlines, syllabi, assignments, and other documents that reflect DEIA principles. Ultimately, our hope is that the Equity Guide encourages faculty and staff to create curriculum and documents that contribute to our efforts to create a campus where students feel seen, heard, and valued.

While you are away...
The Mariposa Building renovation at the Garfield Campus was successfully completed by January 2021. The project upgrades include a ground floor one-stop student Welcome Center & lounge. The Career & Counseling suite on the 2nd floor underwent a major facelift with the addition of a conference room and conversion of private counseling offices. Also, a classroom on the 2nd floor was converted into adjunct offices to address current needs and projected growth. The classrooms and computer labs on the 2nd and 3rd floor have been resized to create more classrooms and offer more class sections. When in person classes resume, be sure to take a Frappuccino break at the new indoor café.
