Gerardo Monterrubio is a Los Angeles-based artist working primarily with clay. Monterrubio’s practice stems from the rich history of the vessel: its narrative-telling and recording art historical context is at the foundation of his practice. His works portray contemporary, and similarly anthropological, studies of his observations of the world. Monterrubio uses his ceramic sculptures as canvases for elaborately rendered images influenced by myth, history, religion, and the human imagination that are at the foundation of cultural paradigms.
Monterrubio’s work has been the subject of national and international exhibitions. His work is included in private and public collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, American Museum of Ceramic Arts, and the Fuller Craft Museum. His work has been featured in the award-winning PBS Craft in America Series, the Los Angeles Times, Modern Magazine, American Craft Magazine, Artillery Magazine, and Ceramics Monthly.
Monterrubio earned a BFA degree from California State University, Long Beach, and an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles.
