This webpage provides you with information that we hope will help you get a strong recommendation that is delivered to the targeted schools within the proper time frame.

Instructors need information from you so that they can craft a customized recommendation for you. Please read the FAQs in the accordion pull downs below and then fill out the PDF recommendation_request_worksheet or the Word DOC recommendation_request_worksheet.

Make sure to list all the schools you plan to apply to and the student deadline for submission so the professors know approximately when the recommendations need to be written.

How long does it take to get a recommendation?

A strong recommendation takes time and consideration to write. When requesting recommendations please give your instructor at least two weeks to complete the recommendation.

Do not expect an instructor to give you a recommendation with less notice. Strong recommendations take time to craft and, without proper time, your instructor may not be able to complete one, or may give a hastily written one, which will do you little good.

Does an instructor have to write me a recommendation?

Shouldn't I just tell the professor what to write about me?

It's the professor's job to select what to say about you. You cannot, and should not, dictate that information since it's up to their discretion and because they know better than students how to communicate best to other instructors about your abilities. However, it's very helpful for you to provide additional information about yourself to your professor, which is another reason why we have you fill out the Recommendation Request Worksheet.
