From the introductory courses on, students are encouraged to explore different techniques and ideas in self motivated projects. Most classes are hybrid classes allowing students to work traditionally or digitally with emphasis placed on creating a professional work flow regardless of the medium. All the instructors teaching in the photography program are working artists and photographers who are dedicated to student learning.
Please note that course numbers were updated this year and the new course numbers are reflected below.
Photography 100 – Introduction to Photography – 3 Units
PHOTO 100 is an introductory digital photography course in which students will be introduced to basic camera features, photo composition, and conceptual development to create meaningful images. The course camera features including aperture, shutter, and light meter, methods to obtain proper exposures and creative control, and composition to improve image quality. Students will learn the basics of image editing software such as Lightroom CC to organize and process their photographs. Note: Students must provide their own Adobe Lightroom CC site license. Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras are available for checkout from the Photography Department. Students may use their own camera if that camera is capable of manual operation. Students who have completed PHOTO 101 before Fall 2021 will not receive credit for this course. Recommended Preparation: MATH 15 and ESL 125. Course Typically Offered: Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall.
Photography 101 – Traditional Photography – 4 Units
PHOTO 101 gives students a comprehensive overview of traditional photography. Students will learn traditional photography techniques, including processing black and white negative film and traditional black and white printing techniques. Through lectures and lab demonstrations, students will have the opportunity to personally experience the creative potential of black and white photography. Students will work in a traditional darkroom setting. Significant photographic works are presented and discussed to provide a context for the production and critique of photographic images. Note: 35mm film cameras are available for checkout from the Photography Department at no cost. Prerequisite: PHOTO 100 or equivalent. Recommended Preparation: MATH 15 and ESL 125. Photography 103 – Medium and Large Format Film Photography– 4 Units
PHOTO 103 introduces students to medium and large format film cameras and builds on black and white skills learned in PHOTO 101. Students learn to pre-visualize and image during exposure, developing, and printing processes. Students create personally inspired projects throughout the course. Significant photographic works by historic and contemporary photographers are presented to provide the diverse cultural contexts for the production of photographic images. Lecture 2 hours/Studio 4 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 101. Course Typically Offered: Spring. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Photography 105 – Projects in Traditional Photography – 4 Units
PHOTO 105 allows students to refine and develop skills learned in PHOTO 103. This course provides a concentrated study in black and white photographic techniques. Students combine technique and concept to explore the black and white process and participate in group and individual critique throughout the term. Students study the work of historic and contemporary photographers working in black and white photography. Students are encouraged to develop their own expressive aesthetics and concepts in their work. Note: Medium and large format cameras are available for checkout from Photography Department. Lecture 1.5 hours/Laboratory 4.5 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 103. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Photography 111 – Lighting I – 4 Units
PHOTO 111 students explore the creative use of available light, basic studio lighting, and on-camera flash. Principles of light, lighting design in relation to concept, exposure control are presented. Students learn to control light through exposure and use light modifiers. Students create projects using course content. Photographic works of significant photographers are presented throughout the course. Note: Students who previously completed PHOTO 106 prior to Fall 2019 will not receive credit for PHOTO 111. Lecture 3 hours/Laboratory 3 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 100. Photography 112 – Lighting II – 4 Units
PHOTO 112 is a course in which students work in the lighting studio using strobes. Students learn the principles of studio strobe lighting, key, fi ll, background setups, exposure control for strobes. Students learn to control and utilize studio strobe lighting systems. Students create projects using course content. Photographic works of significant photographers are presented throughout the course. Lecture 3 hours/ Laboratory 3 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 111. Photography 130 – Photoshop and Lightroom for Photographers – 4 Units
PHOTO 130 is an intermediate Photography course that teaches Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for digital photography. Students create projects using their own digital photos, using Adobe Lightroom to organize and edit photos, and Photoshop to retouch and enhance their images. Basic image exporting and printing are covered. Significant photographic works are presented and discussed to provide a context for the production and critique of photographic images. This is required for photography majors. Lecture 3 hours/Laboratory 3 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 100. Course Typically Offered: Fall/ Spring. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Photography 132 – Digital Photography II – 4 Units
PHOTO 132 provides second level instruction in digital image editing and cataloging software, like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop for digital photography. Retouching, compositing and printing skills are enhanced with hands on training. Students work on projects using their own digital photos. Lecture 3 hours/Laboratory 3 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 130 or equivalent. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Photography 136 – Drone Photography and Videography – 2 Units
PHOTO 136 provides students with hands-on experience creating still and moving images using drones. Emphasis is placed planning and executing flight plans to support camera-based capture systems on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). CATALOG NOTES Note: Students seeking employment in drone operation should enroll in AT-152, Intro to Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles, to prepare for the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Remote Pilot License. Recommended Co-requisite: AT152.
Photography 140 – Fine Art Photography – 4 Units
PHOTO 140 includes learning fine art approaches in photography. The course provides guidance through artistic styles, project and theme development, and technical and design techniques used in fine art photography. In this course, self-motivated projects intended for exhibition are created within a fine art context. Significant photographic works are presented and discussed to provide a context for the production and critique of photographic images. Lecture 3 hours/Laboratory 3 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 103, PHOTO 111, or PHOTO 130 or equivalent. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Photography 142 – Commercial Photography – 4 Units
PHOTO 142 includes commercial and editorial approaches in photography. The course provides guidance through editorial styles, project and theme development, and technical and design techniques used in commercial photography. In this course, projects are created to fulfill specified criteria as they would in a professional setting. The course includes professional practices for photographic work. Significant photographic works are presented and discussed to provide a context for the production and critique of photographic images. Lecture 2 hours/Laboratory 6 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 112 or equivalent. (PHOTO 112 may be taken concurrently) Transfer Credit: CSU.
Photography 144 – Documentary Photography – 4 Units
(Previously PHOTO 118) PHOTO 144 includes documentary approaches in photography. The course introduces and provides guidance through documentary styles, project and theme development, and design techniques used to communicate theme. In this course, projects are created using course information. Significant photographic works are presented and discussed to provide a context for the production and critique of photographic images. CATALOG NOTES Note: This course may not be taken by students who have completed PHOTO 118 prior to Fall 2019. Lecture 3 hours/Laboratory 3 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 111. Transfer Credit: CSU
Photography 146 – Advanced Projects in Photography – 4 Units
(Previously PHOTO 107) PHOTO 146 is designed for advanced photo students to concentrate on a single project during the course. The student explores and combines an aesthetic and expressive use of the photographic medium to complete projects with developed artists’ statements. Research and reading assignments will be made where applicable. Note: Students who previously completed PHOTO 107 prior to Fall 2019 will not receive credit for PHOTO 146. Lecture 3 hours/Laboratory 3 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 103, PHOTO 111, or PHOTO 130, or equivalent. Course Typically Offered: Fall/Spring. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Photography 156 – Professional Practices for Photographers – 3 Units
(Previously PHOTO 115) PHOTO 156 is an advanced photography course covering principles and practices within the field for hire or exhibition. Students construct artist resumes and artist statements related to their work. Course includes promotion, portfolio layout, releases, estimates, invoices, gallery negotiations, and image licensing issues for photographers. Students must have a developed body of photographic work that will be used for class projects. Note: Students who previously completed PHOTO 115 prior to Fall 2019 will not receive credit for PHOTO 156. Lecture 3 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 101. Course Typically Offered: Spring.
Photography 158 – Contemporary Photography and Practices – 3 Units
(Previously PHOTO 145) PHOTO 158 is a survey of techniques and practices of contemporary photographers and their relationship to past practices and movements within Photography. Current trends in photographic image making are presented. Students examine the crossover of fine art, documentary, commercial and editorial practices as well as the impact of digital methods in photography. Note: Students who previously completed PHOTO 145 prior to Fall 2019 will not receive credit for PHOTO 158. Lecture 3 hours. Recommended Preparation: ENGL 101 or ESL 151. Photography 160 – Photoshop I – 3 Units
(Previously PHOTO 121) PHOTO 160 introduces students to basic imaging techniques using Photoshop, an industry standard graphics software and image editor. Students will work with tools, layers, adjustments, and layer masks to create graphics, enhance images, and composite. Students create projects using course information. Note: Photography majors should enroll in PHOTO 130 rather than PHOTO 160. Note: This course may not be taken by students who have completed PHOTO 121 prior to Fall 2019. Lecture 2.5 hours/Laboratory 1.5 hours. Prerequisite: None. Course Typically Offered: Fall/Spring. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Photography 170 – Field Studies in Photography – 1.0 – 3.0 Units
PHOTO 170 provides students with hands on experience photographing in the fi eld. Students will travel and study in the United States at the student’s own expense. Each course offering will concentrate on a specific target area, chosen for its cultural or social significance. Each student will create an individual project that relates to each site, under the direction of a Glendale Community College Photography instructor. Note: This course may be taken 4 times; a maximum of 12 units may be earned. Each repetition must be in a different area of the United States. Lecture 0.5-1.5 hours/Laboratory 1.5-4.5 hours. Prerequisite: PHOTO 100 or equivalent.
