Student Camera Operator Instructions

Instructions for FTVM Promo Video Action Footage

Thank you for agreeing to shoot Behind the Scenes footage of your FTVM shoot!

What’s In it for You?  If you shoot and deliver 10 or more Behind-the-Scenes action shots of your classes or class shoots you will receive:

•An “Additional Footage” credit on our FTVM 2023 promotional video

    •An FTVM Tee shirt

•And, in some cases, extra credit from your instructor (Profs Diehl, Borey, and Ulrey will give extra credit)

Please read the following carefully before you embark on collection of footage!

What kinds of shots should I get?   10 or more shots that meet the requirements below:

•Shots that include ACTION!  Specifically, we need is Behind-the-Scenes footage of your classes learning, planning, shooting, editing, location scouting, hauling gear, getting/giving input, directing, table-reading/rehearsing, or making adjustments to equipment.

•A Variey of camera angles and shot sizes.   A mixture of Close Ups, Medium and Wide shots from different angles (Low and High Angles can be particularly fun)

•Content includes movement:   People can move, or the camera can move! Whatever helps make shots dynamic!

Sound Bytes from real interactions!  We are more engaged when we observe others interacting that when we hear a talking head describe them.  Interactions on set or in class can be great:  Team discussions/debates, giving/taking notes on cuts or scripts, directors conversations with actors, instructors demonstrating something, hilarity!  When people are relaxed, engaged and having fun!

•Shot length of 10 – 30 seconds.  Longer is better- let a conversation or action play out before you cut!  Longer shots allow more choice in editing.

VERY IMPORTANT! Follow the Video Specifications!

You can shoot on a phone or a camera, however, the specifications for the file type are important.  They need to be:

            Resolution: 1920 X 1080 pixels

Frame Rate: 24fps (if you shot 30 by accident, it’s okay)

            Mov, VEIC, Mp4, Prores

No raw or Slog footage or footage with LUTs applied

How do you set your phone’s camera settings?  Since different makes and models of phone differ, you’ll need to do an internet search specific to your phone and camera settings.   Once you know how to get into the settings, you can dial them in to the specs above.

How do you deliver the footage?  To our Media Arts Server, accessible in our SG of HS labs.

When you have obtained 10 or more strong shots:

            •Go to the LAB
