Description: Recently, the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) communities have experienced a significant rise in anti-AAPI bias and hate crimes. In order to understand the current socio-political situation, this presentation will explore the factors associated with the long history of anti-AAPI sentiments and actions within the United States.

The Asian American Movement: Past, Present, and Future

Description: In this dialogue, attendees will walk away with greater knowledge of the social movements associated with Asian American community within the past 60 years. They will discuss these social movements within a socio-historical context and also share their personal experiences being on the ground advocating for various efforts for the Asian American community. Faculty will broaden their understanding of the Asian American experience as it relates to social activism which can help them better serve Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC).

This panel will specifically highlight the salience of intersectional APIDA identities and their influence on our panelists' career development. This panel event aims to help faculty empower and validate our APIDA students through cultural representation and the illumination of successful and established APIDA voices.

Description: Elise is a current GCC student and serves as the President of the Associated Students of Glendale Community College and Student Trustee. She will be leading a class on origami folding. Participants will learn about the origin of origami, the legend of the thousand paper cranes, and also learn basic origami folds. Join this activity to decompress before finals week!

Description: Melissa (she/her) is a first generation Indian-American yoga therapist who is in love with adapting yoga to the individual and studying Ayurveda. She believes that yoga doesn't need to be stripped of its culture and history in order for it to be palatable and beneficial to others. She is deeply interested in the intersection of yoga and social justice, and works to make feeling well accessible to all, but especially those who are often left out of the wellness conversation.

Description: The recent increase in hate crimes towards the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) communities has significantly affected the mental and emotional health of many Asian Americans. Soultree, Founder of Soultree Holistic Healing Arts and Activations, will provide a safe non-judgmental space as they guide audience members through a healing and grounding meditation practice. This guided meditation aims to provide a healing space for AAPI individuals and allies to process their fear, anger, and anxiety in this challenging time. Special attention will be paid to cultivating resilience in the face of uncertainty through mindfulness and reflection.

Eastern Healing Practices Workshop

Facilitated by Wendy Yu

Description: Wendy Yu is a lecturer, author and clinician in the fields of acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition and functional medicine. She received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from Rutgers University, Master’s degree and doctorate of traditional Chinese medicine from Samra University and Five Branches University, respectively. Wendy specializes in the fields of women’s health and reproduction and has a special interest in epigenetic influences on fetal and childhood development. She was the first acupuncturist to be awarded hospital privileges at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and established the pediatric acupuncture program in the department of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine. She has been in clinical practice for over 20 years.
