Home MenuDia Familiar en GCC/Family Day at GCC
Class of 2019-2020
This year, the students in the Estudiantes Unidos program chose a project to help new incoming Latinx students and their families gain more information about the services and programs available at GCC. The students came up with the concept of a Family Day, discussed the content of what to include in the program, and even hosted the event with guidance of the MCEC staff and partner campus offices such as Title V Abriendo Caminos and Student Equity and Achievement programs.
The program included a small Parent Panel as well as a resource fair.
Some of the comments from event evaluation by parents and students showed positive outcomes for those students who attended. In fact, the response was so positive, everyone involved in organizing the event felt that it is worthwhile to make it an annual event.
Here are a sampling of comments from the evaluation form:
"Yes. The pandemic has changed a lot of resources that were available on campus. This fair is helpful to anyone, since everything is new. The way we are using these resources has changed, so I did gain new knowledge that I plan on using."
"I gained more than enough knowledge from today's fair and it allowed me to get a peace of mind."
"In the EOPS session I found out that I am eligible to apply. I also learned that they give extra tutoring and book vouchers."
"Something important I've taken from this meeting is to have a positive mindset when applying to scholarships. There are also various scholarships for Latino students. it is also important to include goal you with to achieve in your applications."
"I learned that you just need to meet one attribute from the list in order to qualify [for EOPS], and even if you're not entirely sure if you qualify you should still apply, cause you never now."
"Yes, I feel like I gained knew knowledge about college resources because i didn't know about some of the resources that are being offered."
