Glendale Community College (GCC) offers a graduate counseling internship for students
in the final year of their master’s program or those who have graduated within the
past year but have not yet gained adjunct counseling experience. This internship provides
hands-on experience in academic, career, and personal counseling, as well as opportunities
to co-facilitate Student Development courses, and support student success programs
in a dynamic and diverse community college setting.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants MUST meet the following criteria:
- Be in the final year of a graduate counseling-related program OR have graduated within
the past year without a previous adjunct counseling assignment at a community college.
- Be enrolled in or have completed a Master’s degree in one of the following disciplines
at a WASC-accredited institution:

Counseling, Educational Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Social
Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, Career Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, and
Guidance Counseling

Be available to intern at a minimum of at least two days per week (10 hours total)
and attend the mandatory weekly supervision meeting on Thursdays from 11 AM to 12
PM. Interns who are interested in completing more than 10 hours per week are welcome
to do so; However, they must notify the coordinators in advance so we can plan accordingly
and ensure appropriate supervision and mentorship.
- Mandatory Summer Training: Interns must attend a four-day training in the third or
fourth week of August in order to prepare for the academic year.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The GCC Graduate Counseling Internship is a one-year commitment from August to June.
Interns begin with a mandatory four-day summer training in August before starting
their internship in the fall.
Interns gain progressive counseling experience throughout the academic year:
📌 Fall Semester – Counselor Shadowing and Observation

Learn about how to conduct academic, career, and personal counseling

Observe experienced counselors in drop-in and student appointments

Assist with workshops and student success programs within the Division of Student
Services
📌 Winter Session – Gradual Transition to Counseling Students

Begin delivering one-on-one counseling services to students under counselor supervision

Assist with creating Student Education Plans (SEPs)

Obtain hands-on experience with completing petitions, forms, and student clearances
📌 Spring Semester – Increased Autonomy

Conduct individual counseling sessions under counselor supervision

Co-facilitate Student Development courses

Continue professional development through mentorship & workshops
Weekly Time Commitment:
INTERNSHIP DUTIES
- Supervised drop-in and express counseling
- Assist in Student Education Plan (SEP) development
- Develop and lead workshops for student support programs
- Co-facilitate Student Development (STDV) courses
- Implement programs and services related to student success
- Participate in campus-wide student support initiatives
Interns are volunteers of the Glendale Community College District, but activities
are designed to fulfill fieldwork or internship requirements for master’s programs.
