Dr. Juily Phun and Jason Pereira discuss the process of curating "The Boba Show" at the Chinese American Museum. This event touches a bit on the history of cassava root, its diaspora, and the personal artists' experiences through art and how the cassava root ties them all together.
Dr. Juily Phun is a multiethnic refugee from Vietnam, known as the "boat people." She grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, also known as the "626" and specifically in Monterey Park, Rosemead, and San Gabriel. She received her BA in history from the University of California, San Diego (2000) and an MA in history from California State University, Los Angeles (2006). She completed her dissertation entitled “Contours of Care: the Influenza Pandemic, Public Health, and the Asian American Community in Los Angeles, 1918-1941” from the University of California, Irvine (2016) under Chicana historian, Dr. Vicki Ruiz. Dr. Phun has been a high school teacher in the San Gabriel Valley and an educator for over twenty years. She is now part of the inaugural faculty hired in AAAS. She considers teaching, civic engagement, and service learning as an integral component of her teaching and research. As a scholar/activist, Dr. Phun’s work includes creating AAPI centered leadership, developing environmental justice gardens, and storytelling.
Jason Pereira or "JP" is a visual Artist of Samoan descent. Influenced early on by his father's architectural work, JP draws inspiration from Pacific Island cultural arts, graffiti art, and graphic design through his life experiences growing up in Southern California and American Samoa. He serves the Pacific Island and Asian American communities in providing graphic design, brand identity consultation, and Artist mentorship resources. JP is currently the Resident Artist at Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PIEAM) in Long Beach, creating murals, commissioned Art projects, exhibits, and hosting student art workshops. He is also a Constellations Fellow for the Center of Cultural Power.
